We are pleased to announce we have a hypnotherapist and life coach (personal development coach) at totally tranquil now.

Welcome Olwyn Rowlands of www.nodressrehearsal.co.uk

No Dress Rehearsal – Hypnotherapy Fact sheet

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a talking therapy that has ancient roots and is now based firmly in well researched psychology and neuro-science. We all know our own mind and can choose to do things. And, we all do things without even thinking and this is controlled by the unconscious mind. No surgeon or doctor can find the mind, and yet we all know that the conscious and unconscious mind exists. To explain this simplistically, the brain controls our emotions, thoughts, memories, anxieties and imagination.

Hypnotherapy works with the unconscious mind by helping to re-programme the brain.

This is what happens when we learn something new. It is true: from learning to tie your shoe laces to learning to challenge anxious thoughts. Our brain learns new ways of doing things and so develops new habits. It was once believed that our brains were set by a certain age and that you ‘couldn’t teach an old dog new tricks’. However, we now know that the brain changes and reshapes: this is called plasticity and we never stop learning no matter how old we get.

What happens in a session?

The first half of the session is talking. It is important to gain a clear insight into exactly what you want to achieve from the session. We explore your motivation for making this change and your beliefs about the issue you want to address. What you believe or what you think is not always true and often that needs to be challenged.

The next part of the session is a relaxation with a guided visualisation. You will be able to hear me talking and you find that the things I am saying sound just right for you. How is this, you may ask. This is because the suggestions I make are all based on what you have told me and therefore they are easy to accept as this is what you want now.

Is being suggestible a sign of weakness? No, it is quite the opposite; it is a sign of strength of character as you work for change. Sometimes it is much easier to stay stuck in an uncomfortable place than to face change. Hypnotherapy is used to bring about positive change that is desired by you.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on the issue you want to address, the impact it has on your life now, and the length of time this has been troubling you. For example, if you suffer from anxiety and have panic attacks it is likely to take a minimum of 3 sessions to make the changes you need to feel more relaxed and confident. However, you will feel the benefit even after the first session. This is a really good investment of your time and money as feeling confident is priceless.

Some issues can be resolved in one session. An example of this could be reducing driving test nerves to enable you to take your test successfully – provided you are a good driver!

Can anyone have hypnotherapy?

Yes, but there are a couple of conditions that may preclude you from hypnotherapy:

Epilepsy or having fits

Serious mental health conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and other psychotic illnesses.

You may be able to consider coaching as an alternative.

If you are already seeing another health professional for your issue, then I would recommend that you consult them first about having hypnotherapy. Most GPs have agreed to this and thought it would be useful for their patients.

Children

I do also work with young people, age 13 years and older and I have a full enhanced CRB check in place. My teaching experience has been mainly with teenagers, young adults and adult returners to learning. Along with this, I have worked with a great number of younger clients, especially around confidence, shyness and exam nerves.

What can hypnotherapy be used for?

Stress management

Reducing anxiety and panic attacks

Fears and phobias

Habit changes: from biting your nails to drinking too much

Exam nerves, including driving test nerves

Shyness and blushing

Confidence building

Public speaking and presentation skills

And so much more…

Find out more:

We were fortunate enough on Friday 27th July to visit Nuffield Hospital, Stockton as guests of Mr Krishna, Spinal Surgeon.

As Physios, we regularly see people who suffer from back pain. Their pain may originate from spinal joints , discs, ligaments or muscles and often a combination of these structures. When these structures get irritated, as a result of injury, poor posture (to name a few) they produce inflammatory chemicals, which our body/ brain and nerve endings are sensitive too, and often this is when we start to feel pain.

Sometimes the spinal nerves can also be irritated. This can be either as a result of direct pressure from a bulging disc or indirectly from swelling in the surrounding area. When the nerves in the lower back (lumbar spine) are irritated we often feel pain, pins and needles and numbness down into the leg and foot (often called sciatica).

Many of these problems in the spine can be helped by Physiotherapy, using a combination of manual techniques such as joint mobilisations, soft tissue massage, nerve mobilisation, acupuncture as well as giving our patients home exercises to do on a regular basis.

Sometimes Physiotherapy may not get the results we expect, or that our patient desires. In this instance we would refer on for further investigation and second opinion. This will often be to a spinal consultant, who will normally assess the patient in their clinic as well as ask for MRI and X-Rays to be carried out in order to have a closer look inside the body.

At this stage there are a number of options discussed with the patient, depending on their diagnosis. For example, joint injections, nerve block, discectomy or spinal fusions to name a few.

Cue our invitation to Mr Krishna to observe these procedures taking place.

One so we can see exactly what happens in that theatre, to let our patients know, and two for our own educational reasons.

It was a full list for Mr Krishna and a truely a fascinating experience for us. We were in clinic 8am-5pm and observed 3 PLIFs (posterior lumbar Interbody Fusions), spinal facet joint injections, a nerve block and a therapeutic epidural. We were then able to accompany Mr Krishna on his ward round afterwards to see how these patients were recovering post-op.

It was a great opportunity for us to literally look inside the body and spine and see exactly what it looks like ‘in the flesh’ as well as see the problem areas, such as a bulging painful disc, which i can only describe after it had been removed as looking and feeling like grissle!! Grim i know, but the relief of having these problem pain causing structures removed from their body was evident to see and hear. One patient descibed no leg pain after their operation, after suffering a constant leg pain for at least 3 months!!!

There are some magnificent things that can be done these days for back and neck pain, and gone are the days where it is acceptable and common practice to be told ‘its wear and tear’ or you just have to live with it’. This is not the case!!!

Please, if you are unsure about you spinal problem, contact us for Physiotherapy in Sunderland on 0191 5652695 or visit www.totallytranquil.co.uk/physio.html . Alternatively if you would like more information on the procedures mentioned in this blog or would like a surgical/consultant opinion visit www.spinalsurgeon.com There are options available to you!!

We would just like to thank Mr Krishna and his team of assistants, scrub nurses and his secretaries for a wonderful opportunity and for looking after us for the day!!

Lindsey and Danielle

June 24th 2012 saw Sunderland Stadium of Light host the Red Hot Chili Peppers first ever Sunderland gig and only the second time they have ever played in the North East too!!.
We were contacted a few weeks before the gig to ask if we would be able to provide pre- gig Physio for the band, as their drummer, Chad needed treatment, and of course we (well I, sorry Danielle!!) said yes!!. It was an honour and a very surreal experience to treat one of the greatest drummers in music!!

The Physio room was located just inside the players tunnel and just next door to the backstage rooms of The Futureheads, The Wombats and Reverend and The Makers.

And without giving away too much information Chad required Physio to treat an ongoing shoulder problem, you can imagine years of banging on those drums has taken its toll!!

I managed to get a little autograph afterwards, which i will treasure!! What a lovely bloke he is!. He tweeted the next day to say thank you and the treatment got him through the gig!

The gig itself was amazing, its like they haven’t aged at all!! A pity there wass’t a sell out crowd to cheer them on. Not sure if that was due to location, popularity, the fact England were playing that night or what?

Thank you Stage Hands Massage/The Hands That Rock, for the opportunity. A truly great experience all round!!

Wow what a busy week we had last week!!

Saturday 16th June saw the Olympic Torch pass through Sunderland on its journey around the UK. Spectators were able to see the flame at a number of locations throughout the city before it made its final stop at Sunderland’s Herrington Park.

We gathered from 9am within the Sunderland Aquatic Centre with great anticipation for the flames imminent arrival. Whilst waiting downstairs at main reception we noticed the officials had the torch in its case ready for the next leg out of the centre. So after a cheeky little request i was able (with my friends and family) to have a hold of the torch and have our pictures taken.. check out our Facebook page for the pics!

At approximately 9:50 lucky spectators, staff and Totally Tranquil were able to see Steve Cram run through the Sunderland Aquatic Centre carrying the Olympic Flame and torch.

He ran in through the main entrance of the centre, waving as he passed through into the main pool area. He was greeted by about 500 spectators (both in and out of the pool). Steve did a jog up 25m on pool side, crossed the boom (stopping for a few cheers and a great photo opportunity for people) before continuing up the final stretch of pool and out the back of the centre.

A great opportunity for the area and its residents. Its just a pity there wasn’t more coverage of the event on the local news stations, we seemed to be overlooked a little despite a running legend carrying the Olympic Flame through an Olympic swimming pool!!.
